Total DS software sales at the end of June were approximately 4.1 million units, with total PSP software sales coming in at about 2 million. Hardware sales paint a similar picture. 2.7 million DS units have been sold in Japan, and 1.56 million PSPs. Week to week, the DS has been outselling the PSP by a ratio of roughly 2:1, with the software ratio coming in even higher.
The PSP has done an excellent job of gobbling up initial marketshare from Nintendo's handheld empire, and it's only one breakout hit from tightening up the race, but for now the DS dominates the Japanese portable scene.

According to NPD data total DS software is currently at 3.4 million units, and total PSP software is at 3.2 million. Without SM64DS being bought along with nearly every launch DS, PSP software sales would already be leading, despite Nintendo's US head start. Hardware is equally close, with the DS at roughly 1.8 million units sold, and the PSP totaling 1.5 million.
Nintendo has thus far been unable to create a new category of casual gamers in the US, like the have in Japan. That, coupled with Sony's ability to ooze "cool" to American 20-somethings has allowed the PSP to all but dominate the DS since its debut.
